FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – St. Anthony’s took a 4-1 first-half lead over Sacred Heart in the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic High School Division AA girls’ championship game today at Farmingdale State College before play was suspended due to inclement weather.
The game will be completed next week at a site and time to be determined.
St. Anthony’s (13-3) iis the six-time defending champion. Sacred Heart(13-6)dealt the Friars a stunning 9-7 upset on April 28- the first time St. Antrhony’s lost a league game (regular season or playoff) since 2007.
This game was a defensive battle until Kasey Behr scored for St. Anthony’s at the 18:10 mark of the first half. Kerri Puckhaber made it 2-0 and Behr scored again to make it 3-0 with 16:02 to play.
Sacred Heart got on the board ona goal by Maggie Casey less than a minute later. St. Anthony’s took a 4-1 lead at the 14:23 mark on a goal by Izzy Mangan.
After Mangan scored at the 14:23 mark the referees suspended the game for 30 minutes because they heard thunder. They were ready to bring the teams back on the field at 6 pm when they heard the rumble of thunder again. Because the field has no lights, it was deemed that play be halted.
