CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Brothers got moved up, but not out.
Christian Brothers Academy, moved from Class C up to Class B this year in girls lacrosse, is back in the state title game for a second time in three years.
The Brothers, now 18-2, got six goals from senior Marisa Romeo and outscored John Jay-Cross River, 17-13. CBA will play Brighton – which surprised Manhasset, 9-8, on a late goal by Kelzi VanAtta in the other semifinal – Saturday at noon for the championship.
With Romeo controlling the draws, CBA got off to a 7-1 lead in the first half. But the Indians from Section I came back to close to within three goals, at 10-7, after the first 25 minutes.
The Brothers pushed their lead back to seven, at 15-8, midway through the second half. But the Indians made another push and closed to within five, at 16-11, with 7:38 left in the game.
After losing in a state semifinal last year, the Brothers are back in the final. CBA won the state Class C title in 2011 with a 9-8 victory over Mt. Sinai.
Maddie Cook and Olivia Pitonzo each added three goals for CBA.
“We made every possession count,” said Pitonzo. “We were so ready (to play). We’ll be even more ready tomorrow.”
CBA coach Doug Sedgwick said losing last year in the Class C semifinal to Shoreham-Wading River (14-13) has been a motivator.
“It’s our driving force,” he said. “We’ve got seven seniors that have won the state championship before and seven seniors that have lost. They know what it’s like to lose and they don’t want to lose again.”
John Jay coach Christina Smith said her team never recovered from a 5-0 run by CBA to open the second half.
“Right after halftime, they went on a 5-goal run,” she said “We got our heads down.”
Brighton 9, Manhasset 8
Brighton, now 18-3, defeated the No. 8 team in the TopLaxRecruits.com rankings as VanAtta scored with 3:42 to play.
The Section 5 champion Barons got balanced scoring from Meaghan Bowen (three goals), Emilie Goldman (two goals, one assist), VanAtta (two goals) and Lauren Smolensky (one goal, three assists).
Sarah Barcia led Manhasset with two goals.
Brighton last won a state title in 2005 – the last year Garden City did not win the Class B crown until this year.
