On the heels of its successful inaugural lacrosse campaign, in which the team finished with an 11-1 record, IMG Academy has announced the latest wave of lacrosse enrollees heading into the 2013-14 season.
Ben French (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Junior/Attack) – French is one of the highest ranked players in all of Canada in the Class of 2015. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound left-handed attackman was one of only two Canadian attackmen selected to play for Team Ontario in both the upcoming U16 National Box and Field Lacrosse Championships. French’s brother, Joe, will be a freshman on the University of Virginia lacrosse team this fall, while his father, Dean, is the National Chairman of Team Canada Lacrosse.
Colyn Lyons (Lafayette, N.Y./Junior/Defense) – Lyons is a 6-foot-3, 220-pound left-handed Native American defenseman from the Onondaga Reserve. Lyons was chosen for the U16 Iroquois field team, while also playing in the 2013 Brine Shootout for Team Syracuse. Lyons also anchored Team Central in the 2013 Empire State Cup.
Maximilian Smith (Skaneateles, N.Y./Senior/Goalie) – Smith was the starting goalie for Team Central in the 2013 Empire State Cup. He was Second Team All-League for New York Section 3. He was also named a Brine All-American, United Capital Challenge and Lake Erie Showcase All-Star.
Chapin Leatherwood (Norwich, Vt./Sophomore/Midfield) – Leatherwood is a hard-working, dedicated midfielder who began playing lacrosse in sixth-grade. He has quickly risen among his peers, even starting several games as a freshman, while competing in several showcase events and tournaments with the New Hampshire Tomahawks. Off the field, Leatherwood received the prestigious Gates award for Science/Engineering while at Cardigan Mountain School. He also dedicates himself to community service as an advocate for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, and a volunteer for the Selamta Project in Ethiopia.
Zach Matthews (Waterford, Ontario, Canada/Junior/Attack/Midfield) – Matthews is a versatile and speedy attackman/midfielder standing at 6-foot-1, 145-pounds. Matthews began playing lacrosse five years ago and has quickly risen, earning several Most Improved and Most Dedicated Player awards. He has competed on several elite teams, including the undefeated 2011-12 Six Nations field team that won the U-16 Ontario Championship. Matthews has also competed for Northern Lacrosse and the Six Nations Midget A-Box team in 2012.
Yoshua Winter-Schwartz (Berlin, Germany/Senior/Attack) – Prior to arriving in the United States, Winter-Schwartz won the U16 Germany Championship, and was a finalist in the U19 Germany Championship. As an attackman, Winter-Schwartz will be competing for a starting position on the National Varsity team.
Ben Baum (Great Barrington, Mass./Post-graduate/Attack) – Baum began playing lacrosse late into his high school career, but was elected captain for his previous high school team and led his county in scoring last season.
Christian Pluchino (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Sophomore/Defense) – Standing at 6-foot, 180-pounds, Pluchino is a two-sport athlete (lacrosse and football). Pluchino has competed for several elite summer teams, including a nomination for the 2013 New Jersey U15 Northeast Division team. Pluchino also excels in the classroom, garnering numerous academic awards.
Other new members include: Tanner Atkins (Brentwood, Tenn./Freshman/Attack), a dual sport (lacrosse and football) athlete; Jesse Trueblood (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Eighth Grade/Midfield), a member of the Arizona-based Scottsdale Swag and Arizona Burn Stealth teams; John Cohen (Caramel, Ind./Eighth Grade/Attack, a member of the two Midwestern elite lacrosse teams, Titanium Indiana and True Lacrosse; Joe Dean (Cape Cod, Mass./Junior/Midfield); and Arda Cetinel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Junior/Midfield).
All join an incoming class that already packs power and includes the likes of Canadian standouts Marc-Antoine Pion-Fregeau, Cougar Kirby, Shakohawi Kirby and Taylor Boyd.
