Good Counsel coach Michael Haight put it this way: “It was a heavyweight bout like that of Muhammed Ali vs Frazier with huge swings of momentum all game.”
Indeed, today’s battle between the No. 2 Good Counsel Falcons and the No. 3 St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Saints was indeed a classic at the Spring Fling in Alexandria, VA.
The host Saints held a 10-5 lead at one point late in the first half, but the Falcons (5-0) used a 7-0 second-half run and claimed a 16-14 triumph over the host Saints (6-1).
Good Counsel got four goals and three assists from Caitlyn Gunn and turned a 12-9 deficit into a 16-12 lead in the second half.
“It was such an awesome game!” said senior Kendall Welch (Johns Hopkins signee), who had two goals. “This win is huge for our program. We have worked so hard and it is great to see it show.
“Coming out of this win we will have a ton of confidence as a team and it will really help carry us throughout the season. We have a tough schedule but today we were able to prove ourselves a little bit. I know we can do great things this year and we are all very excited!”
GC goalie Kiley Keating stood out in the second half
Sophomore Chloe Johnson gave GC a 10-9 lead midway through the second half while two St. Stephen’s players served penalties for yellow cards.
“Yes they are a great team and we knew that coming into the weekend so we had to really focus and execute everything we have worked on,” said Welch. “That’s why we came out on top.”
Senior Ellie Carson (three goals, three assists) and junior Zoe Belodeau (three goals, five assists) led the Saints.
