It didn’t take long for Director of Showcase Lacrosse Brett Manney to assess just how high the talent level was at the inaugural Southern Showcase Camp at Mercer University. More than 80 of the South’s finest players attended the camp and the talent level was evident from the first time everyone got together.
“I think a camp like this really shows how much the gap between the traditional hotbeds and the rest of the country is quickly closing,” Manney said. “There were a lot of players there that wouldn’t look out of place at all if you put them in Philly, Baltimore or Long Island and didn’t know where they were from. The talent level across the country is growing so quickly and that’s an incredible thing for the future of lacrosse.”
That was additionally clear in the prestigious Fab 40 All-Star Game. Players from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas all found ways to punch their tickets to the game, which also meant that the 2017 and 2018 all-stars earned spots in the Philly Showcase, the country’s best recruiting event. The 2019 all-stars were guaranteed a spot in the Philly Freshman Showcase. Click here to see the All-Stars.
“The Southern Showcase Camp was a great opportunity for the best players in the South to be exposed to a high level of lacrosse without having to travel too far,” Manney said. “We were excited to bring the Showcase Lacrosse experience to Mercer because we knew that there a ton of players who can fit in seamlessly at the next level.”
