Kaeli Huff had six goals and an assist and MVP Kelsey Huff had three goals to lead Eastport-South Manor to a 15-8 victory Saturday over Somers in the New York Class B girls’ lacrosse championship game at Cortland State, completing a title-day sweep by Suffolk County teams.
West Islip (Class A) and Mt. Sinai (Class C, click here for story) also won state crowns for Long Island’s Section XI, the first time a section has won all three titles since this system was adopted in 2005.
“The feeling is truly indescribable,’ said Kaeli Huff. “This is a goal that our team has set since the fall. We have worked extremely hard in the off season, as well as during the season. I think I speak for my team when I say that we are extremely proud to bring home the state title for each other and to our community.”
Kaitlyn Doesett added two goals and an assist and Jaime Biskup had two goals for the Sharks (19-3), who were making their first appearance in the state finals.
ESM took an 8-2 first-period lead and was never threatened.
“We focused on playing for each other, as one heartbeat,” said Kaeli Huff. “We wanted to play as a whole and do the little things well. All season, our coaches have been telling us how all the little things add up and Saturday we were able to do this successfully.”
ESM closed its season with six wins after dropping back-to-back games to West Babylon (13-12 in double overtime and Sayville (8-7).
“After losing to Sayville on senior night and the year before in counties, we knew that we needed to change something if we wanted to beat them in semis and make it to counties.” said Kaeli Huff. “The whole atmosphere at practice began to change and everyone came to practice committed and ready to work hard everyday because we knew that was what it would take to achieve our goal.
“At this point in the season we started to write each other’s numbers on our legs, and although that may seem insignificant, it meant a lot to us because it signified our team mentality of playing as one. I think I speak for the whole team when I say that this was such an amazing experience that I wouldn’t want to have lived with any other group of girls. Although were heartbroken to have to let these seniors go, we’re glad we’re able to send them off with ending the season in the most perfect way possible.”
