BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – Junior Emmet Cordrey scored three goals to key a 4-0 third-quarter surge Saturday night as Delbarton toppled Summit, 7-5, to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title at Bridgewater-Raritan High.

Delbarton (21-3) won its fourth TOC championship and first since 2006.

Defensive-minded Summit (18-2) led, 3-2, at halftime until Cordrey scored two straight goals to open the third quarter. After a goal by Jordan Dowiak, Cordrey scored his third of the quarter to make it 6-3.

“It’s kind of surreal right now. We’ve been looking forward to this and preparing for this since December and right now it’s just kind of surreal,” Cordrey said. “We’ve traditionally been a second-half team all year. We collected ourselves and got some great advice from our coaches as half time and came out and executed. This is something I’ll never forget. It was amazing.”

Emmet’s cousin, John Cordrey staked Summit to the halftime lead with two goals and goalie Sam Bebout was a standout with 14 saves.

“Give that goalie credit, he’s an unbelievable goalie,” said Delbarton’s JJ McBride, who scored once. “He had a great career and he had some great saves today but unfortunately [for Summit] he wasn’t able to make them all.”

McBride also led his team with two assists.

“It’s great to get this trophy finally back to Delbarton,” McBride added. “Hopefully it will stay there too.”

Bebout had 10 saves in the first half.

“The key to the success for this year and these kids: playing hard and never giving up,” Summit head coach Jim Davidson said. “And I don’t think we gave up today. We battled right down to the end. We made a couple mistakes, but they did too. They just got on a run and they got a couple face-offs and had the ball (more).”

In the end it was Delbarton that displayed the most firepower with the likes of senior midfielder Jordan Dowiak, who added two goals to the Green Wave tally.

“We game planned around their zone defense and we knew they were going to stop us sometimes anyway. We knew we just had to look past it,” Dowiak said. “This team is so close, such a close-knit group of guys. I have the pleasure of calling them my best friends and fortunately we got the win in the end.”

Senior midfielder Will McCarthy added a goal and an assist, and Delbarton goalie Stephen Kovalsky made seven saves in the winning effort.
