Summit raced to a 7-1 halftime lead and defeated Mountain Lakes, 10-3, today in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions semifinals at Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s John Basilone Field.

The Group 2 champion Hilltoppers (23-1), No. 11 in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings, advance to the T of C finals Saturday vs. Delbarton at Bridgewater-Raritan at 7:30 p.m. Delbarton defeated Ridgewood, 12-6.

Summit, using a stingy zone defense and strong work at the face-off X by Brian Hadley, went on a 5-0 second-quarter run that began with a man-up goal by Matt Fishetti and ended with an unassisted goal by Riley Flynn. Three of those goals were scored over the span of just one minute and 16 seconds.

“Our offense was on queue right there, getting it around nicely, everyone was running to the ball, dodging nice, our shots were on point,” Hadley said. “Coach [Jim Davidson] really pushed us in practice to get us to that point right there.

“Off the opening faceoff they called [violations on] me for the first couple, but after that I started getting them and I feel like it helped out offense kick start.”

Hilltoppers goalie Sam Bebout wasn’t challenged often thanks to the defensemen in front of him, but when he was, the junior goalie came up big.

“I’m very confident [in the defense],” said Bebout, who finished with 11 saves. “I feel when we game plan, our defense is very good. We do what we’re supposed to do and we just always know that someone has your back so you’re not afraid to go 100 percent.”

Mountain Lakes, the Section 1 champion, finished at 22-4. Summit has won 21 straight games.

“It feels great,” Bebout said. “It’s something who people told us that our grade was the worst grade to come through Summit, and I love proving people wrong.

“It just makes it that much sweeter that we’re going to the final. It’s something my brother’s grade did in 2009 and 2010, and I’m just very happy that I get to share this experience with this group of guys.”
