TROY, Mich. – Emilio Sosa scored three goals to lead a balanced attack as Detroit Country Day School defeated Cranbrook, 12-8, Saturday to claim the Michigan Division II state championship at Troy High.

Devon Callaghan, Jack Bergmann, Matt Stebbins and Nick Martin each added a pair of goals and Jackson White stood out in goal to help the Yelloyjackets (17-6) dethrone the defending champion Cranes (12-9) and win their first state title since 2011.
“This was our goal at the very beginning of the season, our very first practice, we said that our goal was to win a state championship and that’s what we were focused on the entire season,” said White, who had several key stops in the fourth period when Cranbrook had closed within 10-8.
“I am just really excited for us and for our team.”
First year- DCDS coach Michael Cappelletti said his team meshed this year.
“The guys just worked hard every day,” he said. “They set that standard. The foundation is there now in terms of the expectations we have for our kids; they rise to the occasion.
“The back of our shirts said ‘Rise’ and that’s what we do. That’s the standard we set; that it’s about us and that it’s never about any other team and I’m just glad that validated that today.”
Cranbrook, led by Matthew Giampetroni (five goals), cut the deficit from 10-5 to 10-8 early in the fourth quarter. But the DCDS defense stiffened.
Martin and Matt Stebbins later scored insurance goals to cinch it.
