Sophomore Alyssa Rydell scored the game-winner today as host Medina (Ohio) edged East Grand Rapids (MI), 9-8, in a thrilling battle between the top-rated girls’ lacrosse teams in Ohio and Michigan according to the LaxPower Rankings.
Medina (10-0-2) has won the past four Ohio state championships and East Grand Rapids (10-2) is the defending Michigan state champ.
Rydell, Amanda Rom (four draw controls) and Cassie Hudson-Heck (two groundballs) each scored two goals and Mackenzie Hitchcock had a goal and four assists to lead the Battling Bees’ attack.
Meanwhile, Sierra Thomas had five draw controls, three groundballs and one caused turnover,
Megan Wolfgang added five groundballs and two caused turnovers and Sally Doyle had two groundballs and two caused turnovers to lead the defense. Goalie Amanda Getto made seven saves
Charlotte Hooker and Claire Ludlow each scored two goals for the Pioneers
Medina (10-0-2) had been weary after playing two games on Saturday, a 9-8 win over Okemos (MI) and a 12-12 tie with New Albany (Ohio). East Grand Rapids had whipped New Albany, 13-2.
