Jennifer Staines had six goals and three assists and fed Alexis Rieu with the game-winner with under a minute to play as the host Falcons defeated Bishop Ireton, 17-16.

Good Counsel, ranked No. 7 in the STEPS lacrosse North America Rankings, closed the WCAC regular season with an 8-0 mark (14-2) overall. Bishop Ireton, ranked no. 6, dropped to 7-1 in the conference and 15-2 overall.

The win for Good Counsel avenged a 17-7 loss to the Cards in last year’s league championship game. Most expect the two teams to meet again in the finals next month.

Bishop Ireton led, 14-11, but Staines later tied it, 16-16.

Kiley Kating had nine saves for the Falcons, including a game-saving stop against Bishop Ireton’s Charlotte Sofield in the final seconds of the game. Taylor McDaniels added six goals for Good Counsel while Kelly Mathews led the Cards with four goals and one assist and Kelly Larkin and Sofield each had three goals and three assists.
