GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Katie Muldoon tallied three goals and one assist to boost Garden City to a 7-5 victory over the visiting Cold Spring Harbor today in a battle of Long Island teams in the Top 20 of the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings.
“Today we really worked as a team,” said Muldoon of the seventh-ranked Trojans. “This was our first home game, our first real test of the season and we wanted to prove to our division that we are here to win.

“We set the tone this game and worked together to get it done. We knew this game was going to be pretty tough so we came out strong and weren’t going to let it go at the end.”
Muldoon scored the first goal of the game after she intercepted the ball from the Cold Spring Harbor (3-1, ranked No. 20) goalie Haley Crosson, sparking a 4-0 run. Garden City (4-0) led, 6-2, at halftime, but the Seahawks rallied in the second half and pulled within two goals with 5:18 remaining.
But Garden City gained possession and stalled for the final four minutes of the game, sealing their victory. Michaela Bruno tallied two goals and Brooke McDaid had two assists for Garden City.
“We knew it was going to be a great game coming in,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “A team of Cold Spring’s caliber, a state finalist last year, hardly loosing anybody, we knew they were going to be really good.
“I was really pleased with our team effort. We knew they were going to come out in the second half ready to go so I was pleased with the way my defense held up in the end. I thought it was really impressive how we were able to stall the ball at the end.”
Samantha DeBellis scored two goals and Ashley Lynch tallied one goal and two assists for Cold Spring Harbor.
“I think we beat ourselves,” said Danielle Castellane. “We couldn’t take care of the ball in crucial situations. People asked me what we needed to do to win this game and I said play smart. We definitely, definitely didn’t do that.
“I’m really proud of my defense for holding them to one goal in the second half. That’s huge if you can hold Garden City to one goal in a half of lacrosse.
“This is an eye opener and lets us know what we need to work on. We are a good team and we were lucky to keep it within two.”
