TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore attack Olivia Mikkelsen scored all of her five goals in the second half and Gussie Johns made 15 saves as visiting St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes claimed a hard-fought 12-10 victory today at Notre Dame Prep.
The Saints, ranked No. 10 in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings, improved to 9-0. Notre Dame Prep fell to 4-2.
Mikkelsen tied the game, 10-10, on a free position, and Caroline Wiseman tallied the game-winner with 1:54 to play before Mikkelsen scored an insurance tally.
.
Johns said the Saints had returned recently from a seven-game Florida trip where they began to jell.
“It feels great, we just came back from Florida and had some bonding time down there,” said Johns. “We learned how to play as a team.
“Being able to come up here and use it against Notre Dame Prep, and just to get efforts from everyone, it was a great team win.”
Georgie Tunney led the Blazers (4-2) with a hat trick and Gaby Burns scored twice while Molly Cobb had a goal and an assist.
Ellie Majure had four goals and Zoe Belodeau added a goal and two assists while Sophie Davidson had a goal and an assist.
“It was a big game for us,” said Saints veteran coach Kathy Jenkins. “They have like 20 D1 players and they are very talented. And they had won three or four games in a row.
“We were tired after the trip to Florida; especially after 10 days away. We’ve only had like one day (of practice) on the field.
“Notre Dame Prep is always a big game. Our offense was forcing passes in and we talked about popping out and making space. I thought when we spread out we hit people inside and had some great assists.”
