OWINGS MILL, Md – Megan Whittle and Sam Burgess each scored four goals as host McDonogh School (MD) capped a fourth straight perfect regular season by whipping Marriotts Ridge (MD), 19-9, in a non-league girls’ lacrosse game today.
The Eagles, ranked No. 1 by TopLaxRecruits and all national polls, closed a 19-0 regular season with their 88stth straight victory – and a very impressive one indeed over a nearby rival that was undefeated and ranked No. 6 coming in.
“It was a great way to end the season,” said McDonogh coach Chris Robinson. “We really played well today and it gives us a lot of momentum going into the playoffs.”
Robinson’s squad is shooting for its fifth straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) championship. The Eagles will begin quarterfinal playoff action next week.
Marriotss Ridge fell to 12-1 but will be a major contender for a 3A-2A Maryland Public championship.
Casey Black and Miranda McCoy added three goals each for McDonogh and Eklizabeth George and Posey Valis each scored twice Grace Muller added one goals and Allison Silber made four saves.
Marissa Davey and Zoe Stukenberg led the Mustangs with three goals each while Taylor Hensh had two and Jenna Kerr scored once.
McDonogh was coming off perhaps its toughest game of the year, a 10-7 victory Monday over Century, another Public school power. Today, the Eagles led, 7-4, and then scored three goals and pulled away to take a 15-6 halftime bulge.
“We had a tough one Monday night and so there were a lot of concerns about how we would finish the season,” Robinson said. We came out strong today against an excellent team.”
“It’s really nice to end the season on this note,” added Whittle. “We played really well today against a really good opponent. We know a lot of the girls on their team and they always come out strong. We really stay composed.”
The Eagles do not seem fazed by the win streak, the rankings or their remarkable success.
“Every game we have to focus and zero in,” said Whittle.
“I think the kids love the up tempo and trapping (style we play),” added Robinson. “Every kid loves to play it. They buy into the system and love what we’re doing. It’s pretty exciting for them and it keeps them loose.
“There is no mental thinking, it’s just go, go, go…”
