Newark Academy (NJ) 2016 close defenseman-long stick midfielder Josh Karp has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Colgate University.
High School: Newark Academy, NJ
Graduation Year: 2016
Position: Close defense/Long stick midfield
College Choice: Colgate University (ConnectLAX college profile)
Club Affiliation: NJ Riot 2016
Lacrosse Honors: Summer Slam Showcase All-Star Team, Philly Showcase Camp Fab 40 All-Star Team, Maverik Showtime All-Star Team, Philly Showcase Camp Most Impressive 2016, 2nd Team All Conference, Honorable Mention All County, 2nd Team All Freshman/Sophomore
What will you major in/study? Environmental Studies/Economics
Why did you choose Colgate? “I chose Colgate because as soon as I stepped onto campus I felt at home. I was drawn to the school because Coach (Mike) Murphy, Coach (Stephen) Toomey, and Coach (Mike) Abbot were as excited for me to be there as I was. Between the high-powered academics, the high-powered Patriot League lacrosse team, and the social aspect, I felt that Colgate was the school for me.”
Thoughts on this past lacrosse season/outlook for next season? “The 2014 spring season featured a very young team with only two seniors and ten freshmen, who made up half of our team. Despite that we played to the best of our abilities and pulled out wins and hung in with teams that were much larger than we were and had more experience. With a very large returning sophomore class and the strong junior and senior classes I believe we will continue to build off the success we saw at the end of last season and be very competitive in our new conference.”
Thank You: “First and foremost I would like to thank my parents and my sister for everything they have done for me throughout this process. I would not have been able to have had the opportunities I have had if it weren’t for them.
“Next I would like to thank NJ Riot founder and owner Lee Southren for being a huge advocate for me in the process and helping me in every way possible. I would also like to thank my youth coaches over the years, especially John O’Hara and Vince Monteleone for giving me such a strong foundation and teaching me to love lacrosse.
“Also, thank you to my high school coach Ted Gilbreath for preparing the team and me for high school and working with me to become a leader on the field as well as off the field.
“Lastly I would like to thank my NJ Riot coach Rob Novack for two awesome summers and I am looking forward to a third.”
Other schools considered: Bucknell, Brown, Richmond, Lafayette, Denver
