POWAY, Ca. – Torrey Pines was in grave need of a lift after suffering four losses in five games, three by one goal and two in overtime.
Friday at Poway, the Falcons earned a 7-3 victory as Alderick Van Der Heyde scored three goals and Makail Fraboni posted 10 saves.

Torrey Pines (12-4) started the year with 10 wins, including a huge 14-11 triumph over St. Ignatius Prep, and was in the C2C Lacrosse North America Rankings. But then came an 8-7 overtime loss to San Ramon Valley and three straight defeats to Colorado teams, including an 11-10 defeat to Mountain Vista and a 10-9 overtime loss to Kent Denver.
After a five-day layoff, this win was crucial.
“The kids made plays in the transition,” said Torrey Pines coach Jono Zissi. “Alderick Van Der Heyde, who is the leader of our team, has done a great job and has done it all year. Those goals that were key and they were off a lot of assists, dodges and feeds.”
Torrey Pines won the battle of shots (29-17), faceoffs (8-5) and groundballs (25-10).
Poway (12-4) entered the week ranked No. 3 in the TopLaxRecruits Western Rankings, but fell to Loyola-Los Angeles, 7-2, on Tuesday. Kienan Morrissey led the Titans with two goals and an assist and Nick Beeson had an assist to become Poway’s all-time leading scorer. Kobe Brown also scored.
Ryan Ramirez also stood out for Torrey Pines with a goal and two groundballs.
Torrey Pines led, 2-1, at halftime and only 3-2 after Morrissey scored late in the third period. But the Falcons scored four of the five goals in the final quarter.
Torrey Pines will host second-ranked and arch-rival La Costa Canyon next Friday. “When we play La Costa Canyon it is the best rivalry in the state of California,” said Zissi.
