Jack Collins netted his third goal off of a feed from Brady O’Donnell with 6 minutes to play, as visiting Taft Academy (CT) earned a stunning 8-7 win over Deerfield Academy (CT) Saturday in a New England West Division 1 prep contest.
It was the first time Taft defeated Deerfield since 2003.
Deerfield (6-1) was ranked No. 14 in the Warrior/TopLaxRecruits Rankings and No. 1 in the TopLaxRecruits New England Rankings. The Big Red improved to 6-1.
Taft received an incredible effort from senior goalie Angus Viebranz, who scored a goal (fourth of his career) and made 20 saves.
Will Sipperly (UVA signee) had two goals and an assist for Taft and Tim Shield Tyler Breen each scored once. O’Donnell dished two assists.
Deerfield led, 4-2, after one period, but with the Taft needing a spark, Viebranz made a save and then took the ball coast to coast, let a shot rip and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. DA added one more late and took a 5-3 lead into the half.
Deerfield scored first in the third to take the 6-3 lead, but taft outscored the Big Green 5-1 the rest of the way.
Defensively, Taft was led by Eric Smith ’14, Zach Ambrosino ’15 and Alex Milardo ’16, who held Deerfield’s potent attack to two goals at even strength. SSDMs Ryan Golding ’14 and Eli Cooper ’15 were solid between the boxes and LSMs Brandon Salvatore ’15 and Will Reid ’14 neutralized Deerfield midfielders.
