TOWSON, Md. – A fourth-quarter goal by Calvert Hall senior Timmy Kelly was the deciding factor to give the Cardinals the 15-14 win over cross town rival Boys’ Latin today in a vintage Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) opener.

“It was awesome beating BL, we haven’t beaten them in two years,” said Kelly who had four goals and two assists for the Cardinals. “Any win in the MIAA is a great win, especially against a team like BL.”
Calvert Hall (8-1) is ranked No. 10 in the Epoch Lacrosse Rankings; BL (8-2) is No. 11.
The Lakers never led in the contest as Calvert Hall dominated on the offensive end throughout the game. The Cardinals went into the half with a 9-7 lead.
BL’s Anthony Wyler gave the Lakers some momentum to begin the second half but Calvert Hall rattled off three straight goals from Ethan Mintzer, Jason Brown, and Luke Ciccarone (2 goals), to make it a 13-9 lead with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
The Lakers defense zeroed in on locking off Kelly and it allowed offensive weapons like Brown to get open. Brown finished the day with a hat-trick and assist.
“Everything was focused on me and Jason (Brown) was shooting it and our players played great today.”
“I was happy with the way we fought at the end but disappointed with the way we gave goals up,” said Boys Latin coach Bob Shriver. “It’s one thing to have Timmy Kelly getting his (goals), but it’s the other ones that bite you a little bit and that is a little disappointing.
“But give Calvert Hall credit they played hard they played a good game.”
Boys’ Latin was without starting goalie Jack Pezzulla on Tuesday due to an undisclosed reason. Liam Frerich played between the pipes and made four saves for the Lakers.
Patrick Spencer and Devin Shewell connected several times down the stretch to pull the Lakers closer but it was too late.
Charley Hughes was another bright spot for Boys’ Latin winning 20-of-33 faceoffs for the Lakers.
Calvert Hall will get ready to play St. Mary’s Annapolis at home on Friday while Boys’ Latin will look to rebound against a strong McDonogh team.
