BALTIMORE – Ben Pridemore had two goals and an assist and Colin Heacock scored twice as visiting Boys’ Latin defeated Gilman School today in a key Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association lacrosse game.
Boy. Latin, ranked No. 1 by TopLaxRecruits.com, improved to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA, while 7th-ranked Gilman fell to 3-1 (8-2 overall).
Tyler Ruhl scored to give Gilman a 3-1 first-period lead before the Lakers kicked into gear. Heacock and Casey Rees scored to make it 3-3 and then Shack Stanwick (one goal, one assist) put his team up early in the second period. The lead stretched to 6-3 at halftime on goals by Hunter Moreland and Pridemore.
The Boys’ Latin defense tightened in the second quarter when the Lakers made their run, which helped them snap a four-game losing streak to the Greyhounds (all by one goal, two in overtime).
“We tried to game plan around their attack,” said Boys’ Latin senior defenseman Tom Brown. “They have some great players so what we tried to do was play smart and at a good tone. This is a huge win; it’s the first time we beat Gilman in a couple years.”
Gilman did pull within 8-6 in the fourth period on an EMO goal by Max Greene , but Heacock iced it with 1:40 to play.
“This is always a close neighborhood rivalry,” said Heacock. “We knew we’d have to fight hard and dig deep. We did the simple things and came out with the win.
“We like to jump out on teams early. We didn’t do that today, but once we started to click, we got into a rhythm and that helped us.”
William McBride and Andy Matthews each scored two goals for Gilman.
Boys’ Latin coach Bob Shriver also was pleased.
“I thought we won a lot of hustle plays, especially in the first half,” he said. “We got behind, but we shut them out in the second quarter. We rode well, we put the ball on the ground and picked up groundballs.”
