BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – Max Greene scored two of his five goals in the final three minutes to spark Gilman School (MD) to a 15-13 victory over St. Paul’s School today in an MIAA contest.
The win improved Gilman – ranked No. 8 by TopLaxRecruits.com – to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA A Conference. St. Paul’s, ranked No., 3 falls to 15-3 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Gilman will play at McDonogh Tuesday in a second-place showdown. Both teams remain one game behind Boys’ Latin, which defeated Loyola Blakefield, 13-8.
Chris Walsch had three goals and an assist for Gilman, while Peter Brown and William McBride added two goals and an assist each.. Thomas McBride made 10 saves.
For St. Paul’s, Greg Louzan scored four goals, Carter Flaig had three goals and two assists and goalie AJ Barretto stopped 17 shots.
After St. Paul’s junior Henry Riehl scored his second goal of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13 with 2:51 to play, the Greyhounds responded On AN EMO opportunity, Greene scored a minute later off a feed from William McBride.
Greene then iced it with 35 seconds left.
“It’s always tough playing here,” said Greene. “We tried to settle it down at the end. We have so many offensive weapons so we trust our teammates and make the plays.
“The St. Paul’s goalie (Barretto) made a lot of nice saves down low so I figured I would shoot high and they went in. We knew it would be a game of runs. They were going to get their goals and we knew we could get ours.”
The Greyhounds were down 9-7 in the third quarter when they scored five of the game’s next six goals, keyed by face-off specialist Davy Prevas.
“We didn’t finish,” said St. Paul’s coach Rick Brocato. “I thought when we tied it at 13 we knew what they were going to do, but we didn’t execute defensively.
“I give them credit. They executed and that’s what you have to do in these 1-goal games. We have to invest more on the defensive end. I give a lot of credit to their face-off kid. This is two games in a row we kind of lost our focus at the face-off X.”
