Boys’ game story: Gilman School toples Calvert Hall in MIAA (with Kudda.com replay)

BALTIMORE – Max Greene collected four goals and two assists and Thomas McBride (12 saves) was a standout in goal as host Gilman School defeated Calvert Hall, 12-8, today in a key Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference contest.

The win kept the Greyhounds (9-2, 4-1) – ranked No, 8 by TopLaxRecruits.com – within a game of first-place Boys’ Latin (5-0). Calvert Hall, ranked No 10, fell to 7-4 and 3-2.

Tyler Ruhl added three goals and two assists and Riley Desmit had two goals and an assist for Gilman, which led, 7-4 at halftime and 8-6 after three periods.

“We talk about energy and effort all the time I didn’t think we demonstrated the type of energy and effort we are capable of in the beginning,” said Gilman coach Brooks Matthews. “I thought we could better and tougher and we did; we responded very well.”

Matthews said each game in the league is critical. His team remains tied for second with McDonogh (an 11-10 OT winner over St. Mary’s) and St. Paul’s.

“It is a cliche you have to go one at a time,” he said. “It’s a very even league and so you keep what’s in front of you in front of you.”

Matthews also lauded the efforts of McBride and his cast of seniors.

“You can see Thomas’ confidence growing every day,” Matthews said. “He is leading the defense and seeing the ball very well. When you do that you can lift your team and he has done that for us.

“Also, Max (Green) is a senior and you expect your seniors to emerge and play tough. You look for your seniors to show the younger guys how to finish plays and we’re getting some good leadership there.”

Stephen Kelly led the Cardinals with three goals while Timmy Kelly and Johnny Kelly each had two goals and an assist.

Calvert Hall has dropped two in a row and finds itself in a key spot as it gears for Friday’s home game with undefeated Boys’ Latin.

We had too many fouls and didn’t scoop up the groundballs,” said Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly. “They got a lot of second chance opportunities or scored goal off a missed groundball here or there.

“We felt like we were fighting uphill. When you’re in the penalty box as much as we were; you just can’t give a team like that that many opportunities extra man – it really hurt us.”
