GARDEN CITY, NY – Justin Guterding and Lucas Clay each collected three goals and one assist as the defending National and Class B state champion Garden City boys’ lacrosse team opened its 2013 season with a hard-fought 8-4 win over visiting Syosset.

Syosset goalie Ryan Feit (Johns Hopkins) was a standout with 14 saves and kept the Braves in the game all day.

“Overall it is nice to get a win,” said Garden City head coach Steve Finnell, whose team is ranked No. 2 by TopLaxRecruits.com. “We were a little sloppy at times but the Syosset goalie was outstanding and he made it very tough for our offense.

“We played much better in the second half but it was the first game so we were going to mistakes and hopefully we will continue to get a little bit better as the season goes on.”

In the first half Garden City took a while to get its offense going and trailed, 2-1, after one quarter. With 6:25 left in the second quarter Guterding scored his second goal to give Garden City its first lead, 3-2, and one it never relinquished.

“This is definitely a big statement for us,” said Guterding, headed to Duke. “We knew they were a good team and they kind of hit us hard and we weren’t expecting it.

“We had a talk at half time and came out played good defense and put the ball in the net. This was definitely a big win.”

Dan Dolan made eight saves for the Trojans and Cody George had a goal and an assist while Jack Worstell scored once and Brian Badgett dished three assists.

Matt Raffa, John Diaz, Nick Hatzipetrakos and Mac O’Keefe each scored once for Syosset, which was 14-5 and reached the Long Island Class A finals last year. Anthony Carchietta added two assists.

“I think Garden City is a great team,” said Syosset head coach John Calabria, “It is tough when you get down by a couple to make something of it.

“I was proud of our guys I think they played well for game one but I was disappointed in some areas of our game.”
