Tuesday’s boys’ result: Salesianum School (DE) tops Georgetown Prep (MD), 7-5

Staff Report

It was indeed a big win for Salesianum School – and also for Delaware lacrosse.

The two-time defending champion Sals (10-2), trying to flex their muscles out of the First State, traveled to Maryland today and knocked off host Georgetown Prep, 7-5, behind three goals from Sean Giampietro and 17 saves from sophomore goalie Ryan Kern.

The victory was monumental for a team that had been looking to knock off an eastern power after earlier defeating a tough La Costa Canyon (CA) squad.

“It was a good win for the program and a good win for Delaware,” said Salesianum School coach Bobby Healy. “It was great to play a team like that – they are really a powerhouse and coach (Kevin) Giblin is great for having us down.

“We appreciate it; it makes our guys better to see great lacrosse like that.”

The Hoyas – who had won seven straight and 13 of 14 – are the favorite to win the DC IAC and are 15-5 overall. Giblin recently won his 400th career game.

Salesianum is 10-2 and looking to break into the national rankings. Maybe that day has arrived.

“We think we are playing pretty good lacrosse,” said Healy, whose squad dropped tight decisions to
Virginia power St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (4-2) and nationally-ranked Malvern Prep (9-5).

Salesianum broke open a 4-4 game in the fourth quarter when Giampietro scored off a feed from Craig Zebrowski (three assists), who then dished off to Jason Kelly (two goals, one assist) for a 6-4 lead.

Georgetown Prep drew within 6-5 with 1:34 on a goal by long pol Matt Billings, but the Sals’ defense stiffened and Giampietro scored again to ice it with 16 seconds to play.

“To go down there and play hard-nosed, tough lacrosse was great,” said Healy. “Our defense was outstanding and Ryan Kern stood on his head. It was a great all-around defensive effort.

The defense was led by Chase Cowan, Freddie Freibott, Zach Kelly and Spenser Urban.

“Offensively, we moved the ball pretty well,” Healy said. “We were able to finish shots when we needed to.”

Troy Reeder and Sam Fink also scored for the Sals.

Colin Giblin led the Hoyas with two goals.
