From Staff Report
Max Murret said even he was surprised by Team Louisiana Black’s team championship in the High School A Division of the Cowboy Cup on Sunday at Russell Creek Park in Plano, TX.
“I really didn’t expect to go so far in the tournament,” said the Jesuit-New Orleans 2017 attackman and Tampa commit. “Most of the guys on the team haven’t played with each other before and we didn’t have a face-off guy.
“We grew a lot as a team from the first game to the championship game. You could tell the effort of the whole team was really there in the championship and the semi-finals.”
Team Louisiana edged Coppell, 7-6, to claim the title after topping Plano West, 9-5, in the semis. Overall, 103 teams competed in the tourney, the 2nd annual, run by the Pattison Sports Group, owner of the Victory Event Series.
Murret said the win was another notch for Louisiana lacrosse.
“Louisiana lacrosse is getting stronger and stronger,” he said/ “Our Louisiana High School Lacrosse League is going in the right direction and more and more teams are joining the league each year. Most of the time we need to go to Texas to find next level competition. It’ll take some time and effort, but Louisiana lacrosse will become just as good as Texas in a couple of years.”
Said Scott Ely, Vice President of Pattison Sports Group: “We are extremely pleased to see how lacrosse in Texas and the surrounding states has taken off. It’s great to see this event go from 43 teams to 103 teams in just one year and we look forward to building on this success with upgrades to the Texas Draw next summer.”

The level of competition was at an all time high with elite teams coming from North Carolina to Texas. Age groups were divided into multiple divisions, enabling recreational and school teams to compete against other teams of similar ability.
Thanks to Victory’s Partnership with Gatorade, the sidelines were fully stocked with both Gatorade and water throughout the tournament while athletes received other Gatorade products for free.
The Cowboy Cup had a well rounded vendor village that included STX, Team Lax Plus, Lacrosse Jewelry, Ultimate Team Posters and LaxSoHard. Delicious hot and cold beverages were also available.
Victory Event Series would like to thank all of its sponsors for their important role in helping make this event a success. We would also like to thank the City of Plano and Russell Creek Park for providing their great facility and ideal fields as well.
