SHIRLEY, N.Y. – Kristin Anderson scored four goals to lead Eastport-South Manor to a 10-6 victory over Sayville Thursday to claim the Suffolk County Class B Championship at Dowling College.
The Sharks (15-4) advance to the Long island championship game Sunday vs. Nassau County champion Manhasset Sunday at 3 p.m. at Adelphi.
“This is awesome,” said Eastport South Manor head coach Becky Thorn. “We made history last year winning our first ever county championship and now to do it back-to-back is great.
“A lot of people doubted us this year because we lost an All-American and some more girls to college. This year we didn’t have one go to person like last year, but we had different people step up at the right time.”
Eastport-South Manor broke open a 5-4 game with a 4-0 run to open the second half. Marissa Gurello (three goals and one assist) and Dakota Mason (one goal, one assist) also led the attack and goalie Sam Giacolone made nine saves to prevent top-seeded Sayville (15-3) from rallying.
“This feels awesome; we worked so hard for it,” said Anderson. “From our goalie to our lower attack girl, we worked so hard this year. I feel amazing. We all wanted this so bad.”
Sayville was without its senior captain, Taylor Mills, who was issued a red card in a 10-8 semifinal win over Harborfields. The Golden Flashes were led by Katilyn Wandeldt, who notched four goals and two assists.
“I feel bad for my seniors,” said Sayville head coach Adam Sznitken. “We had to play without our captain and we didn’t play our best.”
