Saturday’s VA Independent State championships: St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes boys, girls claim titles

John Aversa scored the game-winner with less than 40 seconds to play as St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes defeated Paul VI, 6-5, today to win the Virginia Independent Schools boys’ state championship at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

SSSA (17-6), which plays Landon School Monday in the DC IAC championship game, got two goals from Andrew Wiseman and seven saves from Sam Beazell. Charlie Califf, Seth Miller and Jones Veith also scored and Aversa also had an assist as the Saints repeated as state champions.

Paul VI finished 20-4. The Panthers also fell to Gonzaga, 13-11, in the DC WCAC title game.

VA Girls’ Independent Championship
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes 19, Collegiate School 6

Besser Dyson collected five goals and eight assists and Carly Reed had five goals and three assists as St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes routed host Collegiate School to claim its seventh straight Virginia Independent Schools State championship.

The Saints, ranked No. 4 by TopLaxRecruist.com, finish their season at 29-1. They also won the DC Independent Schools League title Wednesday with a 14-12 conquest of No. 6 Georgetown Visitation.

Ellie Majure added three goals and Sophie Davidson and Margaret Tucker Fogarty each had two goals and an assist. Gussie Johns had seven saves in goal.
