FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Sydney Pirreca and Kasey Mitchell each collected four goals and one assist as Mount Sinai (NY) claimed a 14-8 victory over Wantagh in the Long Island Challenge today at Farmingdale High.

Mt. Sinai, ranked No. 11 by TopLaxRecruits.com, improved to 11-0. Wantagh fell to 7-3.

Also at the LI Challenge, which featured all Long Island squads, Cold Spring Harbor defeated Harborfields, 14-7; Northport toppled North Shore, 18-7; and host Farmingdale clipped Eastport South Manor, 10-8.

“Wantagh is a top notch Class B team in Nassau County,” said Mount Sinai head coach Al Bertolone. “We thought going in it would be a good matchup.

“We gave up a couple of goals late but we’ve been holding teams to single digits all year so to hold them to eight goals was good. This was a well-played game.”

Mount Sinai opened a 5-0 lead in the first 7:42 of the game and opened an 11-3 lead in the second half. Shayna Pirreca had three goals and Caroline Fitzgerald had two goals.

“Overall we pushed our hardest and worked as a team like we always do,” said Sydney Pirreca. “We did better than we expected to today. Our offense was the highlight of the game; we read the defense well and connected on the goal.”

Wantagh ended the game on a 3-0 run. Colleen Lovett scored four goals and Catie Ingrilli scored two goals and one assist for Wantagh.

“This was a great game,” said Wantagh assistant coach Ody Svolos. “They were very competitive and very quick and we expected that. We never gave up and made a run at the end which was good.”
