MELVILLE, N.Y. – Isabela Mangan scored with 2:27 to play, giving host St. Anthony’s (NY) a stunning 9-8 victory over St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes today, sending the No. 2 team in the nation to its first loss of the year.

Charlotte Campbell

The Friars (8-1), ranked No. 11 by TopLaxRecruits.com, used a strong defense and clutch goaltending by freshman Charlotte Campbell to drop the Saints to 19-1. SSSA is ranked No. 2 by TopLaxRecruits.com as well as Nike/US Lacrosse and Inside Lacrosse.

“I’m so proud of our team,” said St. Anrhony’s coach Corinne Lomangino, “St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes is one of the top teams in the country and our team played a great game today.

“We watched them play against (No. 13) Manhasset (16-14 win) yesterday so we knew today was going to be tough. This is huge; they are a powerhouse of a team and we were the underdogs.

“So, this is a big upset.”

Campbell proved to be the difference maker, making 11 saves. Campbell grabbed two crucial saves with a minute left, denying St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes the tie and giving her team possession.

“I’m just so proud of everyone and I’m glad I could be here to witness this win,” said Campbell. “We were the underdog today so we knew we had nothing to lose and if we didn’t play our hearts out we knew we would feel awful about it.”

A key point of the game came at the start of the second half when SSSA standout Carly Reed (one goal) received her second yellow card of the game and had to sit the rest of the way.

Bill led the Friars with three goals and an assist while Kerri Puckhaber had two goals and two assists and Kasey Behr added two goals and an assist

Besser Dyson had two goals and two assists for SSSA while Sophie Davidson and Margaret Tucker Fogarty added two goals apiece.

“I knew they would come out really hard,” said Saints coach Kathy Jenkins. “Their coach is an excellent coach and they are a very discipline team.

“Our team fought really hard and played a great game. It could have gone either way and it was great to come up to Long Island and play this kind of competition.”
