Tommy O’Connor had three goals and an assist and Matt Barrett made 11 saves as host Malvern Prep (PA) defeated No. 14 Loyola Blakefield (MD), 11-6, in its opener on Saturday.
Chris Hilburn added two goals for the Friars, who gave returning coach John McEvoy a victory. McEvoy had been coach at Malvern from 2003-09, winning five Inter-Ac league championships before taking off the past three seasons.
Barrett, a Virginia signee, was making his debut after suffering a torn ACL during a football injury in the fall.
Loyola Blakefield fell to 1-1.
St. Ignatius Prep (CA) 12, Torrey Pines (CA) 7
Joe Lang (Harvard) scored six goals and fellow junior Cyrus Scott (Colgate) stood out in the cage as No. 16 St. Ignatius Prep defeated Torrey Pines at St. Francis in Pasadena in a North-South battle of California powers.
St. Ignatius Prep (5-0), is from San Francisco and was the NorCal champion last year. Torrey Pines (2-1), of San Diego, was the San Diego section runner-up last year.
Gonzaga (DC) 7, St Albans (VA) 4
Attackman Alex Corboy had four goals and Max Planning had three assists to lead the Purple Eagles (3-1) in the Breakout Lacrosse DC classic.
Episcopal Academy (PA) 8, Bullis School (MD) 4
Dutch Buckley had two goals and an assist as visiting Episcopal Academy defeated Bullis School (1-2) to even its record at 1-1.
Peter Gayhardt added two goals for EA while Ian Strain and Curtis Zappala each had a goal and an assist.
