Plano West (TX) has announced the appointment of Kyle Hartzell as the Varsity Head Coach and program Athletic Director.
Hartzell has won championships at the MLL, NLL, NCAA and NJCAA levels, and is currently considered one of the best defensemen in the world.
Hartzell was a standout at Salisbury where he played on an undefeated team in 2007 winning a Division III national championship and leading an airtight defensive unit.
For the last five years Hartzell has been an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at the Boys’ Latin School, a perennial powerhouse competing in the MIAA. Last year Boys’ Latin was No. 1 all season until bowing to Loyola Blakefield in in the league title game. Coach Bob Shriver – in his 39th year at Boys’ Latin – referred to Hartzell as a great teacher of the game.
In 2009 Hartzell was the head coach for the Palo Alto High School Lacrosse program, the team finished 3rd in the state.
Hartzell starred at Archbishop Curley (MD) and later led CCBC Essex to a Junior College National championship before moving on to Salisbury where he led the Sea Gulls to the 2007 National title and a 23-0 season. Hartzell also won both NLL (Washington Stealth) and MLL (Chesapeake Bayhawks) championships in 2010. He now plays for the Ohio Machine of the MLL and Philadelphia Wings of the NLL.
Plan West went 8-8 in 2013.
