From Press Release
Northwestern Combe Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has been named the head coach of United States Lacrosse Women’s U19 team, US Lacrosse announced.
A nine-time national champion — seven times as the head coach of the Wildcats and two times as player — and a two-time World Champion, Amonte Hiller will look to guide the United States to a gold medal at the 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s U19 World Championship in Peterborough, Ontario.
“I am humbled and honored to lead the United States in the next U19 World Championships,” Amonte Hiller said. “It is a very unique and incredible experience to represent your country in your sport. I was fortunate enough to compete in three World Cups as a player and I know first hand what a privilege this is. I’m confident my experience as a player and my tenure at Northwestern will provide the best possible experience for the team.”
“The sport of lacrosse is booming and USL has great responsibility in its growth,” Amonte Hiller continued. “I look forward to evaluating the incredible talent from all across the country and coaching the next generation of young stars and role models in our game. I would like to thank the USL for giving me this opportunity and to Dr. Jim Phillips for the support in allowing me to be the next United States U19 head coach.”
“The opportunity to represent your country is a tremendous honor, and Kelly Amonte Hiller is exceptionally deserving,” said Northwestern Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. “She was a world-class player, built the lacrosse program at Northwestern in her first opportunity to be a head coach, and has led her team to seven NCAA championships in the last 13 years. Kelly’s influence on our student-athletes during that time has been immense, both on and off the field. We’re so proud of all she’s accomplished, and look forward to even more success with US Lacrosse.”
A 2012 U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, Amonte Hiller has guided Chicago’s Big Ten Team to 265 wins since resurrecting the program in 2002. The Wildcat have appeared in 14-straight NCAA Tournaments, winning seven national titles in eight years from 2005-12.
“US Lacrosse is thrilled to have Kelly Amonte Hiller lead our 2019 U19 women’s national team,” said Ann Kitt Carpenetti, vice president of lacrosse operations for US Lacrosse. “Her combination of experience and leadership as head coach at Northwestern, and as a former U.S. national team player, is unmatched in women’s lacrosse. Kelly’s vision to prepare and inspire young women to become leaders, role models and champions, while providing a challenging and memorable experience for our elite U19 athletes, make her ideally suited to lead this team.”
Amonte Hiller helped the U.S. capture the FIL World Cup in 1997 and 2001 and earned all-world honors in helping the U.S. to a silver medal finish in 2005. Her 35 career goals and 67 career points in FIL World Cup play both ranks second all-time in U.S. history.
Applications for assistant coaching and support staff are now open through Feb. 12, 2018.
