From Press Release
New York State Legislator Sarah Anker recognized the Mt. Sinai Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse team on becoming the Class “C” New York State Champions earlier this month. Players, parents, and school officials gathered on the Mt. Sinai High School turf field to celebrate the victory.
“This is a great moment for Mount Sinai’s lacrosse program,” said Legislator Anker. “I commend the girls for their dedication and commitment to their sport.”

The win was a proud moment for veteran players, who competed at the Class “C” championship in 2011. This year the Mustangs returned to the championship in Cortland to defeat Skaneatles, 15-6. Mount Sinai completed its season with a perfect record of 20 wins and zero losses.
The Mustangs were trailing, 3-0, early in the game before going on a 9-0 spurt to take control following a time out by coach Al Bertolone.
“We just had to settle in a little bit,” he said. “We had to win a draw, get a goal, and then the floodgates opened.”
Mt. Sinai, which lost the 2011 Class C title, 9-8, to Christian Brothers Academy, got four goals apiece from sophomore Shayna Pirreca and her sister, Sydney Pirreca, a junior. The Mustangs got another three goals from senior midfielder Caroline Fitzgerald, who was named the tournament MVP.
