POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Jack Bruckner collected five goals and two assists, propelling No. 1 Ward Melville to a 13-6 victory over Shenendehowa Wednesday in the New York boys’ Class A lacrosse semifinals at Marist College.

The Section 11 champion Patriots (21-0), ranked No. 1 by TopLaxRecruits and in all over national rankings, shoot for a mythical national title Saturday (4 p.m.) against West Genesee at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. West Genesee (15-5), the Section 3 champion, advanced with a 13-6 win over Penfield.

“It feels great to come out and execute what we have been practicing,” said Bruckner. “We were a little nervous at the start of this game. We settled down and noticed what we were doing wrong and put some in the back of the net and that really changed things up.

“We are feeling pretty positive after this win and we are going into the next game with a head of steam. Hopefully that works out.”

Ward Melville broke open a 4-4 game with a 6-0 run in the middle periods to take control. Daniel Bucaro had three goals and one assist, Brendan Hegarty tallied three goals and Christian Mazzone scored two goals and one assist for the Patriots.

“It wasn’t one of the better first quarters we played but from that point on we controlled the game,” said Ward Melville head coach Mike Hoppey. “I thought we started out a little bit slow, but I give them credit.

“They are a very good offensive team and it took us a little while to adjust. We have one more to go and it’s the biggest one. It’s been a great year so far and we hope to finish it off in style.”

Ben Robbins was a standout in goal for the Section 1 champion Plainsmen (18-4), making 16 saves. Brian Rogers tallied two goals and Kyle Marr scored one goal and one assist for Shenendehowa.

“Ward Melville is a heck of a team,” said Shenendehowa coach Jason Gifford. “They have a lot of athletes, a lot of speed and a lot of skills. We had our opportunities and they just didn’t fall for us tonight.”
