HEMPSTEAD, N.Y – Justin Guterding had four goals and two assists as Garden City thumped Manhasset, 10-4, today to win its eighth straight Nassau County Class B championship at Hofstra University.
The win vaulted the defending state champion Trojans (16-3) into the Long Island championship game Saturday at Hofstra (2 p.m.) against tomorrow’s Miller Place-Huntington Suffolk county winner.
The victory also avenged a 9-7 loss to Manhasset in the Woodstick Classic earlier this year.
“This was a great team win,” said Garden City head coach Steve Finnell. “We played a complete game. I’m very happy for the seniors because they get to go out as County champs. It is a big deal.
“People don’t understand it because they think we have been here before and that it’s not as special, but our guys appreciate this win.”
Garden City bolted to a 6-0 lead in the second quarter and led, 6-01, at halftime. The Trojans stretched the lead to 9-1 as James Sullivan dominated at the face-off X (14 of 18 draws). Cody George tallied three goals and one assist, Jack Metzler had one goal and two assists and Dale Stasco had one goal and one assist for Garden City.
“We came together as a team,” said Guterding. “This is an awesome feeling; winning our eighth straight and having our senior class not end that streak.
“We aren’t used to being doubted. We definitely use that as motivation to keep pushing and work as hard as we can. Lacrosse is a game of runs and we got a big jump right out of the gate, I’ve never been so happy for my guys.”
Tyler Dunn had one goal and one assist and Matt Gavin, James Clark and Dino Lavelle added one goal for Manhasset (15-4).
“They out hustled us from the opening faceoff,” said Manhasset head coach Bill Cherry. “We didn’t get much on offense because we did not get the ball a whole lot. It’s tough to do anything when you don’t have the ball.”
