Monday’s HS boys’ results: St. Paul’s (MD) stuns No. 7 Hill Academy (Ontario), 13-10

Host St. Paul’s (Md.) opened its season with a stunning 13-10 victory over No. 6 Hill Academy (Ontario) Monday.

Mikey Wynne scored six goals and had an assist and Carter Flaig added two goals and four assists for St. Paul’s while BJ Mattheiss had two goals and two assists.

St. Paul’s surged to a 6-1 lead early in the second period and led 10-4 at the half. Hill Academy is 2-1.

Two goalies, Hunter Pearl (seven saves) and AJ Barretto (six) stood out and the defense – even without injured standout Travis Wood (out several weeks) – was superb, led by Michael Mayer.

The win was significant for the Crusaders, coming off a 3-15 season.

“The defense was terrific,” said St. Paul’s coach Rick Brocato. “It’s been a fun start to begin the season.

“We have a different attitude and a different chemistry. Of course we are a year older, bigger, stronger. They have something churning inside their guts.

“The kids are having fun and I like where we are. That said, the jury is out and we just have to stay the course and build upon that.

“We are going to continue to push them to develop. We are seeing rewards and maybe that helps them buy in even more. I am glad for the confidence, as you know that is so important at this time of year.”
