TOWSON, Md. – Player of the Game Andrew D’Albora collected four goals and two assists to spark Sts. Peter & Paul defeated John Carroll, 13-10, to claim the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) “B” Conference championship Friday at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.
The Sabres (13-5), in winning their second straight B crown, avenged two regular-season losses – 12-10 and 13-8 – to the Patriots (12-6).
Casey Grieves added three goals and two assists while Alex Lacaze and Brooks Zentgraf each had two goals and an assist for the Sabres. Matt Sovero had a goal and an assist and Cory Yoviene added one goal. Sophomore goalie Jerry Surmer (14 saves) was a standout in goal.
The third-seeded Sabres had reached the finals with a come-from-behind 10-9 overtime win over Archbishop Curley in the semifinals.
“The (title) is awesome,” said D’Albora. “We came back Tuesday down five at halftime and came back tonight.
“It’s tough to repeat, but we knew we could do it all season. The first day, we came out, Towson (reaching the finals) was our goal. We came out and completed our goal.
“We were third seed last year and third seed this year, but we came out on top. The underdog status doesn’t faze us. It’s just amazing.”
Sully Gerety had three goals and Jake Brown added two for John Carroll. Michael Thompson and Clark Grube each added a goal and an assist. Carson Walton, Eric McIntyre and Eric Riley each scored once.
