The Katie Samson Foundation has announced the matchups for the 14th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High. The Katie Samson Festival is the single largest one-day lacrosse invitational in the nation each year.
The Festival – which has raised well over $1 million for spinal cord research and development – will be held at Radnor High on April 25-26, 2014. It opens on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. when Penn faces St. John’s in a men’s Division I contest. On Saturday there will be 14 high school girls’ games and 13 high school boys’ games.
Katie Samson attended Radnor High School where she was a goal keeper for the girls’ lacrosse team. She went on to study Art History at Middlebury College where she also played Division III lacrosse and helped her team capture a National Championship in 1999. The following winter, Katie’s suffered a spinal cord injury while sledding in a nearby park and became a quadriplegic.
As a Museum Educator at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and an Adjunct Instructor at West Chester University and Jefferson University, Samson plays adaptive sports and is a noted advocate for people with disabilities.
For the past thirteen years, Samson’s family and the Katie Samson Foundation volunteers have continued to raise money to support spinal cord injury research and increase the quality of life for people with disabilities. As a peer mentor for people who have suffered spinal cord injury, she encourages her mentees to seek out adaptive sports and therapeutic programs that have had such a positive effect on her life.
