Lacrosse coaches receive PCA Awards

04/04/2013 By TopLaxRecruits

From Press Release

Three US Lacrosse member coaches were recently named among the 20 national winners of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s (PCA) Double-Goal Coach Awards. The winners were Alexa Caldwell, a girls’ youth coach with the Asheville School in Asheville, N.C.; David Vollmer, boys’ coach at Lamar High School in Houston, Texas; and Darren Lawlor, boys’ coach at Pacific Ridge High School in Carlsbad, California.

Each year, the PCA, a national non-profit committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience, recognizes 20 youth or high school coaches nationwide, in all sports, for this award. The Double-Goal Coach Award honors recipients for pursuing the goal of winning, and more importantly, the goal of teaching life lessons through sports. The winners receive a trophy, $250, and recognition in PCA’s media campaigns, website and e-mail newsletters.

“We’re pleased to congratulate these worthy US Lacrosse members who have been selected for this distinguished honor as PCA Double-Goal Coach winners,” said Joshua Christian, managing director of sport development at US Lacrosse. “Beyond just winning and losing, US Lacrosse endorses a commitment by all participants to honor the game. We’re proud of our longtime partnership with the PCA, which is equally committed to similar ideals and to recognizing men and women who provide excellence in coaching leadership, both on and off the lacrosse field.”

In addition to the three winners noted above, four other lacrosse coaches were among the 50 finalists named for the 2013 Double-Goal Coach Awards, presented by Liberty Mutual Insurance. They were:

Michael Crowley, Santa Monica Vikings Youth Lacrosse, Los Angeles, CA
Jake McHerron, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake HS & Junior Spartans Youth Lacrosse, Scotia, N.Y.
Toomas Niemann, Suffolk County Girls’ Lacrosse All-Stars, Smithtown, N.Y.
Anthony Petrucciani, Lamar High School Girls’ Coach, Houston, Texas

All but one of the seven lacrosse coaches recognized are US Lacrosse members. One of the components of the coaches’ certification offered through the US Lacrosse Coaching Education Program is completion of the PCA’s Double-Goal Coach workshop. “These coaches help youth athletes succeed on and off the field by striving to win while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports,” said PCA Founder Jim Thompson. “By creating a positive, character-building youth sports experience, they help youth develop into better athletes and better people.”

About Positive Coaching Alliance
Founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is committed to providing all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. To that end, PCA has conducted more than 11,000 live group workshops for sports coaches, parents, student-athletes and school leaders nationwide and impacted more than 5 million youth.
