L.I. Top Guns down L.I. Yellow Jackets for US Lacrosse U15 National Championship

Samantha Geiersbach had six goals and an assist and Samantha Apuzzo added four goals and an assist to lift the seventh-seeded Long Island Top Guns (N.Y.) to a 14-12 win over fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets Blue (N.Y.) in today’s US Lacrosse U15 Girls’ National Championship game.

The Top Guns – who fell in the semifinals in 2011 and 2012, went 8-0 overall and had one-goal wins over M&D (Md.) in the round of 16 and defending national champion Sky Walkers 2016 (Md.) in the quarterfinals.

Taryn Ohlmiller led the Yellow Jackets with four goals and pulled her team within 14-11 with 1:58 mark. Kaeli Huff scored her second goal with about 15 seconds left to make it 14-12, but Grace Beshlian made a save in the closing seconds to ice it.

Third-Place Game: STEPS 2016 (N.J.) 14, BearLax 2016 Blue (Calif.) 5

Emily Wingate scored back-to-back goals less than 60 seconds apart to key a 6-0 first-half run and Sara Szynal had three goals to lead STEPS 2016 (N.J.) to the bronze medal

Semifinal: Long Island Top Guns (N.Y.) 13, BearLax 2016 Blue (Calif.) 7

Samantha Apuzzo had four goals and one assist and Kaitlyn Cerasi added three goals to lead the Top Guns into the championship game. Caitlin McCarthy had a hat trick in the second half for BearLax 2016 Blue, which reached the final four for the first time and became the second California team to do so in the five-year history of the event.

Semifinal: Yellow Jackets Blue (N.Y.) 12, STEPS 2016 (N.J.) 4

The Yellow Jackets raced to a 9-2 halftime lead and coasted to the win.
