Staff Report

Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD) coach Michael Haight said his team had a lot to prove this year.

On Monday the Falcone finished off a brilliant season by defeating Bishop Ireton (VA), 16-9, to claim their ninth Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Girls’ Championship in 10 years.

The top-seeded Falcons (17-3-1) outscored Bishop Ireton, 12-3, in the second half to claim its ninth WCAC crown in 10 years. Last year the Falcons dropped the WCAC title game to Holy Cross (MD), 9-4.

“There was a renewed vigor for the coaching staff and players to go out and prove that last year was an anomaly,” said Haight. “Last year we were very young and didn’t have great team chemistry. They worked very hard this year.

“I think the team chemistry we formed on all the trips we took helped. And last year we had young junior captains that grew into great senior captains this year.”

Good Counsel allowed three straight goals late in the first half to fall behind by two goals in the title game, but Camaryn Kerns scored with 0.1 seconds left in the half and Good Counsel scored the first four goals of the second half to seize control.

Junior Paige Graham had three goals and two assists and Caroline Peters (WCAC Player of the Year) and Haley Giraldi each scored three goals to lead the victory. Kerns had two goals.

“The biggest thing about that game is that at halftime the girls were upset that they hadn’t played up to their ability,” Haight said. “They gritted their teeth and narrowed their eyes and we made a ton of changes that seemed to work.

“We exploded to start the half. It was pretty awesome.”

When Good Counsel lost to Holy Cross last year, it snapped the Falcons’ 90-game conference winning streak.

For Bishop Ireton, Kelly Matthews had three goals and one assist, Charlotte Sofield had two goals and two assists, and Isabel Obregon and Kendall Cunningham each had two goals and one assist.
