VERO BEACH, Fla. – Katy Pridemore scored her seventh goal with 11 seconds to play tonight as host Vero Beach earned a stunning 16-15 victory over Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) in the first of many games this week between teams ranked in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits North America Girls’ Rankings.
For 12th-ranked Vero Beach (9-0), it was an incredible start to a remarkable stretch where the eight-time defending Florida state champs play four ranked teams in five days. On Wednesday the Fighting Indians host McDonogh School (MD), the nation’s top-ranked team and owner of 91 straight wins.
Pridemore, a Liberty University signee, got much scoring support from Vanderbilt commit Zan Biedenharn (five goals).
“It’s huge,” said Pridemore. “Coming off this win and going to play McDonogh tomorrow is really going to help us. It definitely got us off to a strong start for our hard schedule this week.
“I couldn’t do it without God. He has given me this ability and I’m just doing everything I can to bring Him glory every game no matter the outcome.”
Georgetown Visitation led early, 7-2, and held a 10-6 halftime lead. Vero Beach outscored the Tigers, 9-3, to take a 15-13 lead before GV tied it.
“At halftime we knew we had to turn it around and play our game,” Pridemore said. “We knew had we ad to get out of our own heads and go into the 2nd half thinking it was 0-0.”
Biedenharn said the win is a major boost with additional game against No. 15 St. Paul’s School-MD (Thursday at Disney World’s Wide World of Sports arena) and No. 7 Harriton (PA) on Saturday.
“It’s a huge win for us that’ll just give us the momentum we need going into our games for the rest of the week,” she said. “That comeback (we made) was awesome! I had faith in my team that we would win some draws and get the ball on attack and play the game I know we are capable of.”
Hannah Palau added three goals for Vero Beach and Hannah Pridemore scored twice. For GV, Kelly Myers had five goals and Ana Hagerup added four while Grayson McPhee added a pair.
How do you feel about the rest of the week’s games and the season overall?
“I think the rest of this season is going to be hard but fun,” Pridemore said. “Playing with these girls is so awesome and I can’t wait for the rest of our season and its challenges coming at us.”
“I’m excited for the rest of our games” added Biedenharn. “It’ll be very interesting to see how it all plays out both this week, and the rest of this season.
