MT. SINAI, N.Y. – Sydney Pirreca collected seven goals and one assist today to lead host Mt. Sinai to a 15-7 victory over Westhampton Beach.
The defending state Class C champion Mustangs, No. 4 in the Brine/TopLaxRecruits Rankings, improved to 8-0 with their 28th straight win. Westhampton Beach fell to 6-4.
“I thought we put in a good effort,” said Pirreca, a junior midfielder committed to Florida. “Offensively, I think we did really well, we moved the ball well on their zone and we played as a team. Kasey Mitchell held us in this game by getting possession on almost every draw.
“We are still keeping our undefeated record and we have a couple of big games coming up, including Eastport South Manor. Overall I think we are playing as a team and are doing good.”
Mount Sinai controlled the game by dominating the draw grabbing 19 out of the 23 draws. The Mustangs were able to create a 4-0 run in the first half that put them up 6-1 and never let up.
By the 7:54 mark of the second half the mustangs took a commanding 15-5 lead on a goal by Mary Ellen Carron. Kasey Mitchell and Jessica Demeo both tallied two goals and one assist and Carron tallied two goals for Mount Sinai.
“This was a team we should beat, not taking anything away from them because they are a good team and have played everybody tough,” said Mount Sinai head coach Al Bertolone. “It was important that we came out here with consistency off our last big win.
“I thought we did that and I thought we established ourselves early. We had some kids that really played well for us today. Westhampton is a well-coached good team and they don’t go away.”
Alexa Smith tallied three goals and Zoe Recchion tallied two goals for Westhampton Beach.
“I think we just didn’t execute,” said Westhampton Beach head coach Mary Bergmann. “We made mistakes and didn’t capitalize off their mistakes.
“We had turnovers and they had less turnovers. When you have two good teams that is what it comes down to.”
