McDonogh School (MD), winners of 69 straight girls’ lacrosse games, fell behind, 5-3 in the first half of tonight’s showdown at No. 9 and seven-time state champion Vero Beach (FL).
But the Eagles regrouped and outscored the Fighting Indians, 9-1, the rest of the way and coasted to a 12-6 victory in their season opener.
McDonogh has won the last three national championships, according to the national rankings. The Eagles last year snapped Vero Beach’s 69-game win streak to open the season.
Vero Beach is 7-1.
Sammi Burgess (five goals, one assist) and Grace Muller each scored to tie the game, 5-5, at halftime. Then in the second half Elizabeth George (two goals) put McDonogh ahead before Vero Beach tied it again.
Megan Whittle (three goals) then gave the Eagles the lead for good and Bella Huther made it 8-6 off a Burgess feed. Burgess and Whittle scored to make it 10-6 and then George and Burgess tacked on goals at the end.
Vero Beach had jumped out quick, taking a 3-0 lead before Burgess scored a pair and Whittle tied it.
