MELVILLE, N.Y. – One of Massachusetts’ top girls’ lacrosse teams ventured to Long Island today to test its mettle.
Notre Dame Academy had dominated its six in-state foes heading into play against 12th-ranked St. Anthony’s. But the Friars bolted to an 8-0 lead and later held off a Notre Dame rally en route to a 19-9 victory.

Kerri Puckhaber had four goals and an assist and Ella Bonafede added three goals and an assist while five others scored two goals and Charlotte Campbell made nine saves for St. Anthony’s (4-1).
Charlotte Allard had three goals and one assist and both Isabella O’Conner and Alex Dalton tallied two goals for Notre Dame Academy (6-1), which rallied from an 11-3 halftime deficit to pull within 13-9 at one point. The Friars then scored the last six goals of the game.
“We are just fortunate to have an opportunity to come out here and play,” said Notre Dame Academy head coach Meredith Frank. “This was an opportunity for us to come out here and evaluate where not only our team is, but where our state is in lacrosse.
“We would’ve loved to have performed better but they are a powerhouse.”
The Friars have rebounded well since losing, 13-12, to Vero Beach (Fla.) on April 3. Last week they downed Baltimore power Bryn Mawr, 5-3, on the road.
“We felt good coming into the game today,” said junior Kerri Puckhaber, “We meshed together, got ground balls, talked on defense and we all connected on attack. This was a good game for us.”
Kasey Behr and Isabela Mangan both had two goals and two assists for St. Anthony’s, while Maggie Bill and Kaitlyn Quinn each had two goals and an assist and Taylor Mitchell scored twice.
“They are a really great team,” said St. Anthony’s head coach Corinne Lomangino. “We put a lot of things together over the last couple of weeks so I’m excited about the progress that we made.
“I’m proud of my girls this is a good win against a really good team.”
