Girls’ championship: No. 15 Milton celebrates 4th straight Georgia 6A title

Milton (GA) recently defeated Lassiter, 10-7, to claim its fourth straight 6A (large schools) state championship and eighth since the Georgia High School Association began sanctioning the sport in 2005.

The visiting Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Milton (18-3-1) battled back to take a 5-4 halftime lead. In the second half, the lady Eagles, ranked No. 15 by TopLaxRecruits.com, held Lassiter to one goal until allowing two late tallies.

Annie Ruland had three goals, two assists and two caused turnovers for Milton while Jessi Masinko added three goals and Caroline Youngs made 12 saves. Brooke Winsness contributed one goal, three caused turnovers and two interceptions.

Lauren Wetherhead made 17 saves in goal for Lassiter (15-6-1).

“Even though we weren’t shooting the ball well, we played some of the best defense we’ve played all year,” said Milton coach Tim Godby. “We gave up only one goal in second half until the last three minutes when the game was out of reach.”
