GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Garden City’s girls’ lacrosse team was in need of a boost.
The Trojans had suffered a 10-4 loss to Cold Spring Harbor on Thursday and saw their non-league game with St. Anthony’s postponed by poor weather on Saturday. That made Monday’s 13-5 win over three-time defending state champion Connecticut more improtant.

“We had a really tough loss against Cold Spring Harbor a couple of days ago,” said Trojan 2016 Harvard commit Katie Muldoon, who had four goals and one assist. “So we really wanted to come out and prove to everyone that we were here to win.
“We wanted to prove to our coaches, ourselves and our league that we all want it. We worked really hard the last couple of days and we were really determined to get this win.”
Darien (3-1) was No. 17 in the STEPS Lacrosse Rankings coming into play. Garden City (4-1) had dropped out of the Top 20 after its loss.
Darien got on the board first on a goal by Kayleigh Murrill. Garden City responded with a 4-0 run that took the Trojans into the half with a 4-1 lead. Darien was within 9-5 early in the second half, but the Trojans scored the game’s final four goals.
Michaela Bruno tallied three goals and one assist and Jackie Brattan and Jenn Medjid tallied two goals each for Garden City.
“We came off a loss last week so I think it was a check for the girls to figure out what they needed to do,” said Garden City head coach Diane Chapman. “They came out really hard and ready to play today.
“Darien is always a really good team, very aggressive team, well coached and skilled. It was nice we were able to get a lead and make the other team try and come after us. We were very pleased today with some of the things we did today.”
Laura Murphy and Kayleigh Murrill tallied two goals each for Darien.
