BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Kelly Myers was pleased when DC Metro 1 coach Kathy Jenkins decided to move her back to midfield in the second half of today’s Onondaga (top division) championship game against Long Island Metro 1 at the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament.
Myers responded by scoring two of her three goals in the second half – including the tying goal with 3:28 to play – as DC Metro 1 claimed its first team championship with a thrilling 8-7 victory at Lehigh University.
Then, after celebrating with her teammates, Meyers – a rising senior at Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) – was honored to be named the winner of the Heather Leigh Albert Award as the top player in the National Tournament.
“It was so surprised and so shocked and so lucky; I am very excited,” said Myers, who has committed to Stanford. “In high school I play midfield and I take the draw.
“They put me on defense in the first half in this game, but at halftime they said ‘You need to go back to midfield’ and I went to more of an attack position. We just really jelled and finished.”
Myers said her team – consisting of girls from Northern Virginia, DC and Southern Maryland – bonded quickly.
“It was amazing,” she said. “All my friends said this was the first time we were able to hold up a No. 1 in a picture.”
Myers said the DC defense was a key. Long Island featured a number of skilled and fast attack players that required special attention.
“Our coaches were telling us which were the top players that we had to mark,” she said. “The defense stepped up. Each one of those (Long Island) players) had amazing shots.”
