From Press Release and Staff Report
The Haverford School (PA) on Saturday will host the 5th Annual Nike “Checking for Cancer” Lacrosse Invitational, annually considered one of the nation’s premier high school events.
The day will feature four boys’ games – including several nationally-ranked teams – as well as a record number (five) of girls’ games.

Aside from great competition, the primary purpose and motivation behind the formation of CFC is to promote awareness of Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular Cancers. Information tents with valuable literature will be available to help educate people to the importance of early detection and education.
Haverford School head coach John Nostrant, a cancer (prostate) survivor, said the event is special because so many people are impacted by cancer.
“We have a unique opportunity here,” he said. “Our event provides us a great venue to
bring people to our campus to watch great games, and hopefully while they are here, they will spend a little time at the information tents to learn how to protect themselves. Any family who has been affected by cancer will tell you, early detection is critical”.
The boys’ field features Haverford School (5-3), a four-time Inter-Ac League champion and the 2011 “National Champion,” meeting Connecticut prep power Salisbury School (1-0), ranked No. 10 by TopLaxTecruits.com.
Also, California power and defending CIF San Diego champion LaCosta Canyon (7-1) faces Inter-Ac power Penn Charter (8-4); two-time defending Delaware state champion Salesianum School (2-2) meets New Jersey prep power St. Augustine Prep (1-2) and another Connecticut prep power, Brunswick School (3-0, ranked No. 19 by TopLaxrecruits.com) squares off with New Jersey’s Chatham High (3-0).
The five girls’ games all features teams from the Philadelphia suburbs with the top game being Central League power Harriton (4-1) meeting defending Inter-Ac League co-champion Academy of Notre Dame (2-2). Also, four-time defending Catholic Academies champion Merion Mercy (2-0) faces Downingtown East (1-2), the 2011 District 1 champion and state runner-up.
“It’s great to have the (girls’) teams involved and we have a good matchup with Salisbury,” said Nostrant. “And it’s great to have LaCosta Canyon coming in from California.
“But it’s all about the cause and what we can do to raise awareness.”
Information about the event can be found at www.checkingforcancer.org. Donations to this great cause can be made on that website.
Nostrant, a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, has exhibited the strength and character to successfully conquer the cancer battlefield. In doing so, CFC honors Nostrant and the many men and families who have faced their ultimate struggle against cancer.
On the business side, CFC has raised over $150,000 in just four years, with all event profits earmarked for cancer research and for those organizations in need of special support. Last year’s total contribution of $33,000 was donated to the University of Pennsylvania, the Kimmel Cancer Center, Cuddle My Kids and Bringing Hope Home.
The 5th Annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational will be successful because of our Corporate Sponsors, Patrons, Program Book Advertisers and a $5.00 and up Admission Donation. We thank everyone in advance for all their terrific support. Also, and most importantly, we thank you for your interest in learning more about male cancers and your strong voice in encouraging early detection.
