BOYDS, Md, – Alex Bianchi (Aquinas Institute) scored three goals to help Rochester open defense of its two Brine National Lacrosse Classic boys’ high school championships Monday with an 8-5 victory over Florida at the Maryland Soccerplex.

Rochester finished 1-0-1 in the first day of action in the three-day tourney that features 20 regional teams. Rochester also tied New Jersey, 6-6. Rochester and New Jersey were tied atop Pool A with identical records.
Bianchi, a 6-2 attackman, was proud to play for a team that also won the last two Brogden Cup championships, defeating Canada in a tourney in Florida that matches the Brine NLC champion with a Canadian All-Star team.
“I did not play last year but hearing from other guys who have played, they said it was a great tourney, with great exposure,” said Bianchi. “They also said everyone had a lot of fun playing together.
“I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to play this year.”
Rochester was trailing, 3-2, vs. Florida before going on a 6-1 spurt to take control. Eric Munn (2014 attackman) added two goals and Mitchell Standera (2014 midfielder, Pittsford), James Felix (2015 midfielder, Pittsford) and Stephen Quinzi (2014 attackman, Pittsford Sutherland) each scored once. Kevin Maguire (2015, Pittsford Sutherland) made six saves.
“You feel like some teams want to beat us because we won the last couple years,” said Bianchi. “I am pretty happy, but each game we need to keep getting a little better.”
In the tie with New Jersey South, Quinzi scored three goals and Colin Greenway (2014 attackman, Williamsville East) added two for Rochester. Dean Roseman (2014 midfielder, Penn Charter) had four goals for New Jersey South, while goalies Tyler McCormick (2016, Seneca) and Matt Sefcik (2015, Morrestown Beard) each had five saves.
In Pool B, Syracuse is 2-0 with victories over West, 5-2, and Washington D.C., 6-4. Max Smith (2014) has 12 saves in the two games for Syracuse while splitting halves.
In Pool C, Long Island North is 2-0 with wins over Illinois, 9-0, and New England North, 6-5. Alex Concannon (2015 attackman, Syosset) had three goals for LI North in the shutout over Illinois and Tyler Dunn (2015 attackman, Manhasset) scored a pair in the victory over NE North.
