MINEOLA, N.Y. – Sean Cerrone tallied four goals as host Chaminade defeated its second fellow Long Island power on Wednesday, topping Massapequa, 7-4.
Chaminade took control by breaking open a 3-3 game at halftime with three unanswered goals in the third period.
“I was really happy with how we battled today,” said Chaminade head coach Jack Moran. “We had one short burst there with a three-goal run and for two minutes we were a little bit better and that was it.
“Both goalies played well and defensively it was really athletic on both sides of the ball. I’m really happy with our kids.”
This first half featured tight defense and solid goaltending. But in the third period Cerrone gave his team the lead and Sam Bonafede and Thomas O’Connell followed up to make ti 6-3.
“We played slow in the first half I think because of the cold weather,” said midfielder Cerrone. “We realized we had to pick it up or we weren’t going to win.
“At half coach told us if we didn’t come out and play fast at the beginning of the third quarter the game would go their way.”
Matt Isnardi made six saves and O’Connell tallied one goal and one assist for Chaminade. Matt Valdini grabbed eight saves and Craig Berge tallied two goals for Massapequa.
Chaminade next hosts No. 17 Fordham Prep on April 2.
“It was a hard game, they are a real good team and we are a real good team,” said Massapequa head coach Tim Radomski. “Some of our shots didn’t fall and they had a little run.
“It’s a non-league game; they’re good we’re good and it’s going to be a good season.”
